God Owns Everything Except Our Decision to Live in Heaven

Where is the Arrogance About Life When God Owns Everything?

At the prime of his life, age 36, a friend of mine died of heart attack. Very healthy and robust, but his heart failed him one day during a party. Yes, the first symptom of a heart attack is death, the number one killer disease. Everyone attending the party was shocked, couldn’t accept seeing a healthy young man killed by a cardiac failure. From such episode of life, we saw how God owns everything. At His command, we may live or die. For in “his hand,” stated Job 12:10, “is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.”

Observe Luke 12:16-21:
And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

I watched “Hereafter” on TV and heard one actor in the movie (location: Paris) saying that death is merely the turning off of the “lights,” the unplugging, so to speak. I visited Paris, and I noticed our tour guide proudly claiming to be an atheist and that he guesstimated of around 30% of Parisians do have his religious convictions, too. We may use all types of unparalleled description about death. We may call it as the cessation of existence or the flight of the soul out of the body or the unplugging or the turning off of the lights. We may claim to be atheists or agnostics. But the Bible truth stands. God owns everything. He has all the power and authority to expel that reality called life out of the body—anytime!

God Owns Everything Except Our Decision to Live in Heaven or Hell

Life is full of surprises. We heard it often. It is because we don’t own it. God owns everything except sin and man’s willpower to reject heaven and live in hell instead.

God will give ETERNAL LIFE to each one of us (no favoritism) on only one condition, that is, our personally trusting and believing in Christ Jesus as only Lord and Savior. (Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16, John 3:36, John 1:11-12)

We are not talking about church membership or baptism or giving money to the poor as our passport to enter God’s city. (Eph. 2:8-9; Is. 64:6) Eternal life is given to us all for free. Wrote the apostle Paul: “but the FREE GIFT OF GOD is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 6:23b)

God owns eternal life (too), and He is giving it to us for free through our believing and accepting that God the Son, Jesus Christ, condescended to become humanity’s Sacrificial Lamb by His atoning death on the cross.

Wrote John, the apostle: “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2 NIV) Yes, life is full of disappointments but going to hell is not surprising at all given God’s invitation to a FREE ETERNAL LIFE in heaven by faith in Christ.

Our heart, soul, and conscience witness our shame and guilt before our Holy Father. We need a “bridge” to approach God since our sinfulness had separated us from our Maker as when Adam left paradise for disobedience. In the Old Testament, Moses served as the go-between and contact man between the Israelites and God. Now, Christ came down from heaven to act as our Mediator (1 Tim. 2:5) and Advocate (or Lawyer, 1 John 2:1) and our Intercessor (Rom. 8:34).

We’ve heard about Jesus Christ all the time. He is not just in the Bible and history books but also in the testimonies of the people who have met Him by faith. He is the most-mentioned name on Facebook. Christ is inescapable. You would know Him by seeking Him in your heart. Yes, God owns everything except our decision to live in heaven or hell depending on our response to accept or reject Christ Jesus in our soul.

For there is one God, and one MEDIATOR also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus . . . . My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an ADVOCATE with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous . . . . who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also INTERCEDES for us. (1 Tim. 2:5; 1 John 2:1; Rom. 8:34)
